Procedural city emerging from a glowing node graph and modular street grid

Unreal Engine 5.8 City Sample: A Free PCG Worldbuilding Lab

Free dev resource

Epic has rebuilt City Sample for Unreal Engine 5.8 with new procedural-world tools, editable examples, and an Unreal MCP workflow. The download is free.

What changed

The updated sample includes new levels built around Unreal Engine’s Procedural Content Generation framework. Epic highlights uneven terrain, curved roads and sidewalks, Nanite foliage, forests, and large-world organization through World Partition.

The important architectural change is that the new city is built entirely inside Unreal Engine. The original City Sample grew out of The Matrix Awakens and depended on procedural tooling outside the engine; this version is intended to demonstrate a more integrated workflow.

MCP without the magic claim

Epic shows the Unreal MCP server assisting with worldbuilding through a compatible language model. The company is careful to frame the result as editable tooling rather than a black box. That distinction matters: production teams still need source control, review, deterministic steps, and a way to reproduce changes without trusting a chat transcript.

Who should download it: environment artists, technical artists, tools programmers, and educators evaluating PCG in UE 5.8. Treat it as a reference project, not a drop-in foundation for a small game—the hardware, storage, and complexity demands may be substantial.

Where to get it

Epic says the sample is available through Fab, the Unreal Editor Home Panel, or the Epic Games Launcher. Verify engine-version requirements before adding it to an existing project.
