If you are staring at EA Sports FC 27’s $99.99 Ultimate Edition because you want to play early, there is a cheaper test sitting right beside it.
EA Play’s 10-hour FC 27 trial is live now, one week before the game’s worldwide September 25 launch. EA says the trial is based on the Standard Edition, and Xbox confirms that trial progress carries into the full game if you decide to buy.
That makes the trial more than a demo. It is a ten-hour audition for a yearly sports game that asks returning players to decide whether the new gameplay, Career changes, Ultimate Team systems and the new Grounds mode justify another purchase.
For a lot of players, the smart move is obvious: use the trial before you buy the expensive edition.
Quick Take
EA Play trial: 10 hours of FC 27 Standard Edition from September 18.
EA Play price: EA currently lists membership at $5.99 USD per month and says members save 10% on eligible EA digital purchases.
Xbox pricing: Microsoft currently lists FC 27 Standard at $69.99 and Ultimate at $99.99 before the EA Play member discount. Regional storefront pricing can vary.
Best for: returning FC players, Career Mode players and anyone unsure whether this year’s gameplay changes feel meaningful enough.
Who may still want Ultimate: committed Ultimate Team players who value the included FC Points, Premium Pass, Player Evolution slot and early access enough to pay for them.
Ten Hours Is Enough to Answer More Than You Think
FC 27 is not a 100-hour RPG where ten hours barely gets you through the tutorial. The core question is how football feels under your thumbs.
EA is pitching more fluid attacking movement, smarter curved runs, off-balance dribbling, redesigned set pieces and player-focused defending. Those are exactly the kinds of changes that are difficult to judge from a trailer and relatively easy to judge after a few real matches.
If you have played hundreds of hours of FC 26, you probably do not need a reviewer to tell you whether a first touch, defensive response or passing lane feels better. Ten hours gives you time to test the parts you actually care about.
The trial also lets you sample this year’s bigger structural changes instead of buying on promises.

The Grounds Is Probably the First Thing New-Gen Players Should Test
The Grounds is FC 27’s biggest “this did not exist last year” pitch. EA describes it as a social football playground where players can move between Kickabouts, 1v1s, small-sided matches and Clubs competition while developing a custom player.
There is one material limitation buyers need to know: The Grounds, including Clubs in this format, is only available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. EA’s official site excludes PS4, Xbox One and the original Switch from that feature.
If The Grounds is a major reason you are interested in FC 27, do not accidentally buy the wrong-generation version because the box says FC 27.
Career Players Have a Better Reason to Test This Year
Manager Career is getting a rebuilt Transfer Market. EA says valuations now react to club buying power, player potential, ratings and form, with active bidding and new negotiation mechanics such as performance and buy-back clauses.
That is the sort of system that can sound brilliant in a feature list and still feel cosmetic in practice. Career players should use the trial to start a save, make a few deals and see whether the market actually creates different decisions.
Dynamic OVRs are another change worth testing because player form, morale and fitness can now affect ratings across clubs. If that creates a more alive season, Career players may get more value from FC 27 than the usual annual roster refresh.
Ultimate Team Players Have the Harder Decision
The Ultimate Edition is not charging $30 more only for early access. On Xbox, the current listing includes 6,000 FC Points delivered over three months, a Player Evolution slot, five Manager Live Challenge creation slots, a 5-star Senior Scout and other Ultimate Team and Career bonuses.
For someone who knows they will spend the next year in FUT, those extras have real utility. For somebody buying primarily for Career Mode or casual matches, most of that value can disappear quickly.
This is where the trial is useful even if you eventually buy Ultimate. You can test the actual game first and decide whether the bonus package is enhancing something you already like instead of paying extra to discover whether you like it.
The EA Play Math Is Pretty Friendly
EA lists EA Play at $5.99 per month. Membership includes the 10-hour FC 27 trial and a 10% discount on eligible EA digital purchases, FC Points and DLC.
Microsoft’s current Xbox listing shows the effect directly: the $69.99 Standard Edition is displayed at $62.99 for members, while the $99.99 Ultimate Edition is displayed at $89.99.
So if you were already going to buy digitally on Xbox, a month of EA Play can partly or completely pay for itself through the discount, depending on the edition and your regional pricing. Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members also get EA Play access on Xbox’s ecosystem, so many players may already have the trial without buying another subscription.
Check your own storefront before paying, because membership availability, taxes and regional pricing can differ.
Do Not Waste the Trial on Menus
Ten hours sounds generous until you spend two of them changing kits and staring at card animations.
Go in with a test plan. Play enough normal matches to judge movement and defending. Try The Grounds if your platform supports it. Start Career Mode if that is your main reason to buy. Open FUT only if FUT is actually where you plan to live for the next twelve months.
You are not trying to “finish” the trial. You are trying to answer your buying questions before the clock runs out.
Who Should Buy Which Version?
Buy Standard if you mainly play Career Mode, offline matches or casual online football and do not care about a head start in FUT. The core game is the core game.
Consider Ultimate if you are a committed FUT player, know you will use the FC Points and premium bonuses, and early access matters enough to you.
Use the trial first if any part of that sentence contains the word “maybe.”
Wait for worldwide launch if you are in no rush. FC 27 launches globally on September 25, with the PC standard release unlocking September 24 at 23:00 UTC according to EA’s launch roadmap.
ZerotoBeast Take
Annual sports games have a weird buying problem: the people most capable of judging the upgrade are the people who already know the old game inside out.
That makes a ten-hour trial unusually valuable. FC veterans do not need ten hours to learn how football works. They need ten hours to answer whether this football feels better, whether Career has enough new life, whether The Grounds has staying power and whether FUT’s changes justify another year of attention.
Do that before spending $99.99 because a countdown clock is yelling “EARLY ACCESS” at you.
The countdown clock will survive.
