The Minecraft Dungeons II release is only two days away, which makes this the point where “looks fun” needs to become an actual buying decision. Mojang Studios and Double Eleven are launching the sequel on September 29 across Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, with day-one Game Pass support inside the Xbox ecosystem. See Minecraft Dungeons II on Xbox.

Minecraft Dungeons II release fact #1: September 29 is the global launch date
The official Minecraft Dungeons II release date is September 29, 2026. The important part is the platform spread: Xbox, PC, PlayStation, Switch and Switch 2 all get the game, so this is not an Xbox-only dungeon crawl wearing Minecraft clothes. Read Mojang’s official Minecraft Dungeons II FAQ.
#2: Game Pass changes the value equation
If you already pay for Game Pass, the easiest version of the Minecraft Dungeons II release decision is also the cheapest: install it and see whether the combat loop earns your evening. Xbox lists the Standard Edition as included with Game Pass, which removes the usual “is this worth thirty bucks?” debate for subscribers. Check Minecraft Dungeons II Game Pass availability.
#3: the standard Steam price is $29.99
Steam currently lists Minecraft Dungeons II at $29.99 USD for the Standard Edition and $49.99 for Deluxe. The Deluxe version adds the Soul cape, Blub pet, four hero skins and DLC 1 and 2 as those packs release. Unless you already know you want the DLC, Standard is the cleaner entry point. Check the current Minecraft Dungeons II price on Steam.
#4: you do not need to finish the first game
Mojang says you do not need to play the original Minecraft Dungeons before Minecraft Dungeons II. That matters because sequels often accidentally turn curiosity into homework. Veterans may understand returning systems faster, but newcomers are not being asked to complete a prerequisite campaign first. See Mojang’s official sequel FAQ.
#5: co-op is still central, not a side mode
The pitch for Minecraft Dungeons II is still built around fighting through dungeons with friends, collecting gear and taking on tougher enemy combinations. Xbox’s official page emphasizes teaming up, new locations and a new enemy threatening two worlds. If your group enjoyed the first game’s low-friction co-op, this is probably the feature that matters more than any cosmetic pre-order bonus. See the official Minecraft Dungeons II gameplay overview.
#6: pre-orders are mostly cosmetic
Pre-ordering Minecraft Dungeons II adds two hero skins, the Twisted cape and the Twisted chicken pet. Those are fun extras, but nothing in the official listing suggests you need them to access core gameplay. Translation: if you hate pre-ordering, you are not apparently sacrificing a dungeon, class or major system. See the Minecraft Dungeons II pre-order bonuses on Steam.
#7: the sequel needs to prove its loot loop has grown up
The original was charming and approachable, but the long-term question for the Minecraft Dungeons II release is whether new enemies, gear and locations create more interesting decisions instead of simply more numbers. Mojang says the sequel expands the weapons, enemies and features of the first game. That sounds right. Now the game has to prove those additions create better builds, better co-op roles and reasons to keep playing after the campaign novelty wears off. Pre-order or follow Minecraft Dungeons II on Xbox.
Who should play it first?
If you have Game Pass, the answer is almost comically easy: try Minecraft Dungeons II on launch day. If you are buying outright, the $29.99 Standard Edition is the sensible starting point unless the planned DLC already has you sold. For families, co-op groups and players who want action RPG loot without needing a spreadsheet degree, September 29 is worth watching. See more of our Xbox Game Pass picks.
